SF mayor: ‘We should be the testbed for emerging tech’

San Francisco is becoming a hub for cutting-edge technology, particularly with the presence of Waymo and Zoox robotaxis navigating its streets. Anticipation builds as Uber prepares to enter the market through collaborations with Lucid and Nuro. Mayor Daniel Lurie articulated his vision for the city during his appearance at TechCrunch Disrupt, emphasizing the importance of San Francisco as a leader in emerging technologies, including AI and healthcare innovations. "We should be the testbed for emerging technology," Lurie declared, showcasing his commitment to fostering a forward-thinking environment. He expressed pride in Waymo's accomplishments within the Bay Area, highlighting the city's welcoming stance towards new entrants in the autonomous vehicle sector. However, Lurie stressed that safety remains a top priority. Regulations governing autonomous vehicles are set at the state level, with the California Department of Motor Vehicles overseeing testing and deployment. In addition, companies wishing to charge for robotaxi services must obtain permits from the California Public Utilities Commission. While Lurie champions the integration of autonomous vehicles, he acknowledges that not all cities share this enthusiasm. For example, Boston has contemplated banning autonomous vehicles altogether. He pointed out that Waymo has demonstrated a safe ride experience, attracting tourists eager to try driverless vehicles. "We hope to see services expand to the airport soon, facilitating transport into the city," he added. Despite the optimism, challenges persist, such as the Teamsters Union's advocacy for restrictions on self-driving trucks to safeguard jobs. Nevertheless, Lurie remains optimistic about technology's potential to generate revenue and employment opportunities. "We believe in the future," he stated confidently. "The future always starts in San Francisco, and we are committed to embracing it."
