San Francisco mayor pushes for tougher rules after the Waymo traffic fiasco

San Francisco's Mayor Daniel Lurie, an advocate for innovative technology, is now calling for more stringent regulations on autonomous vehicles after a recent incident caused a significant traffic disruption. This came to light nearly two weeks after Waymo's robotaxis became immobilized during the July 4 celebrations, leading to extensive traffic jams that affected countless commuters. In a formal request to state regulators, Lurie highlighted the necessity for improved operational standards for self-driving cars. He referred to the chaos triggered by a severe power outage last December and the influx of 100,000 attendees at the Golden Gate Bridge fireworks show, both of which resulted in numerous Waymo vehicles becoming stranded and exacerbating traffic issues across the city. The mayor pointed out that these incidents revealed a gap in California's regulatory framework, which he believes fails to adequately manage how autonomous vehicles respond to significant disruptions. "The challenge for California is not only ensuring these vehicles operate safely under normal circumstances but also their ability to function effectively during extraordinary events," he stated. To address these concerns, Lurie proposed that autonomous vehicle manufacturers be required to demonstrate four essential operational capabilities. He urged the California Department of Transportation to implement statewide standards aimed at averting future incidents like the July 4 traffic chaos. Lurie's vision includes mandates for companies to swiftly remove or relocate robotaxis blocking travel lanes and to adjust routes and service areas in real time. Additionally, he suggested that these companies should share real-time operational data with local authorities, detailing service interruptions, the locations of immobilized vehicles, and their recovery efforts. They must also prove their ability to manage large surges of traffic and passengers through rigorous testing. Waymo, which operates approximately 1,000 robotaxis in the Bay Area, has been a focal point for regulatory scrutiny. Despite California's stringent regulations compared to states like Texas and Arizona, the city remains a hub for autonomous vehicle testing. Several companies, including Nuro and Zoox, hold permits for driverless vehicle testing, reflecting the area's role as a proving ground for such technology. While Waymo has made efforts to mitigate disruptions, including assigning a representative to the city's emergency center during busy times, Mayor Lurie believes that voluntary measures are no longer sufficient for managing the growing fleet of autonomous vehicles in the city. He asserts that the four proposed regulatory requirements will enhance the safety and efficiency of self-driving cars rather than hinder their development.
