Samsung's shares surge as much as 6% company ships next-generation AI memory chip samples

Samsung Electronics has experienced a remarkable surge in its share price, climbing as much as 6.51% after the announcement of its new high-bandwidth memory chip shipments. The company has begun distributing samples of its groundbreaking 12-layer HBM4E chip globally, marking a significant milestone in the industry. This innovative chip boasts impressive speeds of up to 16 Gigabits-per-second, coupled with enhanced energy efficiency and thermal performance, as outlined in a recent press release from Samsung. High Bandwidth Memory chips, which are crucial for advanced artificial intelligence applications, are produced by major players such as Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron. These chips enable processors to swiftly manage vast amounts of data, a necessity for AI accelerators like Nvidia's Rubin and Google's Ironwood Tensor Processing Unit. Samsung's HBM4E chip, which features a vertical stacking of Dynamic Random-Access Memory, offers a substantial capacity of 48 gigabytes—more than a 30% increase over its predecessor. The company is also planning to expand its product offerings with an 8-layer 32GB version and a 16-layer 64GB configuration, tailored to meet specific customer needs. Sang Joon Hwang, executive vice president and head of memory development at Samsung Electronics, expressed confidence in the company's trajectory, stating, "Through our advanced manufacturing capabilities and preemptive infrastructure investments, we will continue to drive the growth of the global AI memory market." This update follows Samsung's earlier shipments of HBM4 chips to clients in February, as the company aims to close the gap with SK Hynix and solidify its standing in the next-generation AI memory sector. Currently, shares are trading 3.67% higher at 310,500 won.
