Samsung forces ads onto fridges; is a bad sign for other appliances

Samsung has introduced a controversial change to its Family Hub refrigerators in the United States, which range in price from $1,800 to $3,500. These innovative fridges, equipped with either 21.5-inch or 32-inch screens, previously allowed users to personalize their displays with photos, videos, memos, and more. However, in a recent move, Samsung has begun utilizing these screens to showcase advertisements. According to a representative from Samsung, a new over-the-network (OTN) software update will roll out for Family Hub refrigerators. This update includes revised Terms of Service and a Privacy Notice. As part of this pilot initiative, advertisements will be featured on the Cover Screens—those that appear when the refrigerator’s screen is not actively in use. The design of these ads may vary based on the user's personalization settings, but they will not be displayed when the screen is set to Art Mode or showing photo albums. For users who find certain ads unappealing, there is an option to remove them temporarily, so they won't be displayed again during the campaign period. However, Samsung's communication regarding this pilot program has been somewhat vague. They have not answered specific inquiries about which refrigerator models are impacted or how they plan to address potential customer dissatisfaction regarding ads on high-end appliances. This initiative seems to have come to light primarily through discussions on Reddit, as highlighted by reports from SamMobile.
