Samsung's much-anticipated Galaxy Z TriFold, the company’s inaugural triple-foldable smartphone, has drawn criticism following a rigorous durability assessment that unveiled significant flaws contrary to the brand’s promises of enhanced resilience. In a recent video by renowned tech reviewer Zack Nelson, known as JerryRigEverything, the Galaxy Z TriFold underwent a series of standard durability examinations. The device's outer display, which features Gorilla Glass Ceramic 2, showcased visible scratches at a level six on the Mohs hardness scale, with more pronounced marks appearing at level seven. This performance mirrors that of typical smartphone glass rather than showcasing any cutting-edge protection. The inner flexible display exhibited even greater susceptibility. Light scratches emerged at level two, while deeper grooves were observed at level three. Nelson pointed out that everyday items such as keys, coins, or even fingernails could easily inflict damage on this interior screen. Concerns escalated during the fire resistance test, where the outer OLED display began to sustain permanent damage after approximately 17 seconds of exposure to a lighter flame. Pixels turned dark and failed to recover. The inner display endured worse damage, showing visible effects after just 10 seconds, with neither screen able to recover once the heat was removed. During the dirt test, Nelson introduced loose debris onto the unfolded display, resulting in an audible crunch from the hinge mechanism. Dust accumulation around the internal magnets indicated the complex folding system may be particularly sensitive to fine particles. The most alarming moment arrived during the bend test. Unlike the Galaxy Z Fold 7, which withstood similar stress, the Galaxy Z TriFold did not fare well. Applying pressure from one corner caused the device to visibly warp, and bending it in the opposite direction produced a loud crack followed by the screen going entirely black. Nelson stated that this marks the first instance of a Samsung smartphone completely failing his durability assessment. While the hinge remained intact, the phone’s slender frame, especially around the antenna lines, was identified as the main structural weakness.
