Labor unrest at Samsung may worsen memory chip supply issues

Tens of thousands of employees from Samsung Electronics gathered at the company's Pyeongtaek facility in South Korea on Thursday, signaling their readiness to initiate an 18-day strike next month. At the heart of the dispute lies a conflict over compensation. The workers' union is demanding that Samsung eliminate its cap on performance bonuses and allocate 15% of its operating profits directly to its workforce. Despite ongoing discussions, Samsung has not reached an agreement, leading to stalled negotiations. The electronics giant is currently engaged in legal battles with the union while simultaneously navigating the negotiation process. In the competitive landscape of memory chip production, rival firm SK Hynix is reportedly poised to distribute average bonuses of approximately $400,000 to each of its 35,000 employees early next year. In response, Samsung has proposed a compensation package for its memory chip division that exceeds those offered by competitors, yet the union has rejected this offer, as per local media sources. A representative from Samsung did not provide comments prior to publication. Historically, Samsung has been regarded as one of the most sought-after employers in South Korea. However, the widening bonus gap with SK Hynix is putting that reputation under pressure. Notably, not all attendees at the rally supported the union's stance; some shareholders expressed their concerns directly across the street, accusing the workers of jeopardizing the company during a critical period. The timing of this unrest is particularly concerning for Samsung, as the surge in AI technology is intensifying the global chip shortage. The leading memory chip manufacturers—Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron—are racing to satisfy the growing demand from AI data centers. These companies have shifted resources away from consumer markets to focus on producing high-bandwidth memory chips for AI applications, which are yielding significantly higher profit margins. Currently, AI data centers account for an estimated 70% of the high-end memory chips manufactured worldwide, leaving consumers competing for the remaining supply. The prices of standard memory chips, such as DRAM, have soared since early 2025. Should Samsung Electronics’ workforce of over 35,000 proceed with their strike next month, the repercussions could extend all the way to Silicon Valley, exacerbating the ongoing memory chip shortage.
