Samsung launches S26 smartphone as sector braces for memory chip crunch

Samsung Electronics has launched its latest flagship smartphone series, the S26, which sees a price increase of $100 for two of its models compared to their predecessors. This move comes as the tech industry grapples with a significant shortage of memory chips, largely driven by the rapid expansion of AI infrastructure. The new S26 series showcases enhancements in artificial intelligence and features a pioneering privacy display. According to Counterpoint Research, the average price of smartphones is set to rise by 6.9% by 2026 due to the ongoing memory shortage. Notably, the top-tier S26 Ultra maintains its price from the previous year's S25 series, while the S26 and S26+ models have increased in cost. Industry analyst Ben Wood from CSS Insight warned that the memory chip shortage is far from a short-term problem, predicting it will persist into 2027. He emphasized that the surge in AI infrastructure needs is diverting crucial supply away from smartphones and other consumer electronics. The S26 series marks Samsung's third generation of AI-enhanced smartphones, following the S24 release two years ago. The new devices are reported to have faster processing capabilities and utilize AI for various functionalities, including photo editing and document scanning. While Wood acknowledged the progress made in user-friendly AI features, he expressed concerns about the perceived value these enhancements bring to consumers. A standout characteristic of the S26 Ultra is its innovative privacy display, designed to limit visibility from side angles—a feature Samsung claims is a world first. Research indicates that memory costs in the smartphone sector have more than doubled in the past two quarters, and while manufacturers are investing in new production capacity, the shortage is anticipated to last until at least 2027. A Samsung representative noted that the rising costs of memory semiconductors are a global challenge affecting the entire industry. The company aims to navigate this situation effectively through strategic partnerships and a flexible response to market dynamics. Analysts suggest that smartphone manufacturers are actively seeking to mitigate risks associated with the memory shortage by diversifying their supplier networks. This issue has evolved from a niche supply-chain concern to a significant strategic constraint impacting AI development pathways. In conclusion, as memory prices remain high, Samsung faces the critical decision of whether to prioritize profit margins or production volumes.
