Samsung SDS shares jump 20% on KKR partnership and $820 million bond purchase

Shares of Samsung SDS experienced a remarkable surge of up to 21.3% on Wednesday, fueled by a significant investment from global private equity giant KKR. The partnership involves KKR acquiring newly issued convertible bonds worth 1.22 trillion won, equivalent to approximately $820 million. This strategic move aligns with the growing trend of technology companies increasing their investments in artificial intelligence infrastructure and digital transformation initiatives. As Samsung SDS seeks to capitalize on the escalating demand for AI services, the company, which is part of the Samsung Group and an affiliate of Samsung Electronics, announced that KKR will provide advisory support on mergers and acquisitions, capital allocation, and global expansion efforts. "Through this strategic collaboration, we will actively explore a wide range of growth opportunities, including M&A by leveraging KKR's expertise accumulated in global capital markets," stated Jun Hee Lee, President and CEO of Samsung SDS. The funds raised will not only boost Samsung SDS's investments in AI infrastructure but also enhance its role as a comprehensive AI solutions provider. This entails delivering all components of an AI system, from foundational computing power and data storage to the user-friendly AI applications that businesses rely on. Additionally, Samsung SDS continues to offer traditional cloud services, digital transformation, and logistics solutions to a diverse range of global clients. On the same day, shares of Samsung Electronics saw an uptick of nearly 4% in South Korea, aided by a positive performance in U.S. technology stocks the previous night. Chung Ho Park, Partner and Head of Korea at KKR, expressed confidence in Samsung SDS's market leadership, stating, "Against a backdrop of increasing demand for digital transformation and AI solutions, we have strong conviction in Samsung SDS' market leadership and growth potential by playing a critical role in advancing Korea's digital capabilities and infrastructure." KKR's investment is primarily sourced from its Asia Fund IV, with the transaction expected to finalize in the second quarter.
