South Korea’s Samsung Electronics is anticipating a remarkable surge in profits, projecting a threefold increase during the last quarter of the previous year, fueled by soaring prices in the memory chip sector. The company, recognized as the largest memory chip manufacturer globally, forecasts an operating profit of approximately 20 trillion won alongside consolidated sales nearing 93 trillion won for Q4, as disclosed in an earnings guidance released on Thursday. This anticipated profit marks a significant leap compared to the same period the previous year and is set to surpass Samsung's prior record of 17.6 trillion won achieved in Q3 of 2018. The upswing is largely attributed to heightened demand for memory chips, particularly for artificial intelligence applications, with major chip producers like Nvidia vying for limited supplies. As memory manufacturers prioritize production to satisfy this lucrative demand, the market is experiencing a shortage that extends to chips utilized in personal computers and mobile devices. According to a report by Counterpoint Research, the memory market has entered a 'Hyper-Bull' phase, surpassing the peaks observed in 2018. Supplier leverage is currently at unprecedented levels, driven by an overwhelming demand for AI and enhanced server capabilities. The research firm estimates that memory prices surged between 40% and 50% in the final quarter of 2025, with expectations of continued price increases in the first quarter of 2026 and a further rise of about 20% in the second quarter. While these market trends are raising manufacturing costs for many consumer electronics companies, they present a significant opportunity for memory industry leaders like Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron. Over the past year, Samsung's stock has risen over 145%, reflecting this booming demand, with a slight increase of 0.5% noted on Thursday amid fluctuating trading conditions. Despite this success, Samsung still trails behind SK Hynix in the production of high-bandwidth memory (HBM) chips, which are critical for AI processors, including those made by Nvidia. Expanding HBM production capacity is anticipated to be a key focus for Samsung in the upcoming year, as the company prepares to release its comprehensive earnings report and conduct its quarterly earnings call later this month.
