Can Samsung outmaneuver Apple’s cool factor? We may soon find out

The ongoing rivalry between Apple and Samsung in the smartphone arena is set to take a new turn. On Wednesday, Samsung unveiled three innovative foldable phones, highlighted by the all-new Galaxy Z Fold 8, designed to capture a wider audience. This release comes just as Apple gears up to introduce its inaugural foldable iPhone in September. Samsung's Drew Blackard, senior vice president of mobile product management, expressed optimism that Apple's entry could benefit the foldable market overall. He noted that while many consumers in the U.S. may be familiar with the concept of foldables, few have had the opportunity to interact with one. This could change with Apple's influence, potentially driving consumer interest in such devices. Although foldable phones currently make up a minor segment of the smartphone market, they cater to premium customers seeking unique options in a landscape filled with similar-looking devices. Industry analyst Dave Nicholson likened the foldable market to first-class and coach seating on airplanes, emphasizing the need to maximize revenue while satisfying diverse consumer demands. Historically, Samsung has dominated the 'first-class' segment of foldable devices, but the company might soon share that status with Apple. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 features significant design changes, becoming shorter and wider, resembling a compact Moleskin notebook that fits comfortably in one hand. Previously aimed at early adopters and business users, Samsung is now promoting the Z Fold 8 for general use, such as streaming videos and reading. Users previously criticized the screen compatibility of older Z Fold models, which resulted in unsightly black bars during video playback. The redesigned Z Fold 8 aims to rectify these issues and enhance the functionality of its AI features, according to a report by market research firm Counterpoint Research. More screen space allows for improved multitasking and app interaction. Samsung's newest devices will integrate Google's Gemini Notebook app, designed to analyze documents and facilitate actions across different applications. Alongside the Z Fold 8, Samsung introduced the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, boasting a larger screen and upgraded camera, as well as an enhanced version of its flip phone. However, these advancements come at a premium, with the Z Fold 8 starting around $1,900 and the Z Fold Ultra priced from approximately $2,100. Apple remains the last major smartphone manufacturer yet to launch a foldable device, a situation that may change soon, as reports suggest the company will unveil its first foldable offering at the upcoming iPhone launch event. Renowned analyst Ming-Chi Kuo indicated that Apple is securing components for a foldable iPhone this year. While Apple has a reputation for transforming emerging technologies into successful products, its foray into foldables could lend the category a significant boost. Analysts anticipate that foldable phone shipments will surge by 21% annually by 2026, primarily driven by Apple's market entry. Projections suggest Apple could claim 25% of the foldable market by that year, while Samsung is expected to hold 32%. Despite skepticism about foldable phones achieving mainstream popularity due to their high prices, Blackard emphasizes that Samsung's focus is on diversifying the market. He envisions a return to the pre-smartphone era, where varied designs and formats were commonplace in mobile devices, fostering consumer choice and satisfaction.
