The world of Android virtual reality is making a significant comeback with the introduction of Samsung's Galaxy XR headset. This innovative device marks a pivotal moment as it is the first to operate on Google’s new Android XR platform, a feat made possible through a strategic collaboration between the two tech giants. Available for pre-order at a price point of $1,800, the Galaxy XR headset is designed without controllers, emphasizing its immersive experience. Visually reminiscent of the Apple Vision Pro, it features a fully enclosed design with passthrough video capabilities and an external battery pack connected by a cable. Under the hood, the headset boasts impressive specifications, including 16GB of RAM, 256GB of internal storage, and the Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 processor. This advanced chipset offers six CPU cores and an Adreno GPU, making it capable of supporting dual 4.3K displays. The Galaxy XR houses dual Micro-OLED displays with a resolution of 3,552 x 3,840 and a 109-degree field of view, surpassing the pixel count of the Vision Pro and nearly tripling that of Meta’s Quest 3. The display refresh rates can reach up to 90Hz, although a default setting of 72Hz is used to conserve battery life. Like its counterparts in the XR space, the Galaxy XR is equipped with multiple cameras. It includes two 6.5 MP stereoscopic cameras for capturing the environment and overlaying virtual elements, alongside six outward-facing cameras dedicated to headset positioning and hand tracking. Additionally, four internal cameras facilitate eye-tracking and iris scanning for secure unlocking and password entry in certain applications.
