Samsung unveils Galaxy XR, the first Android XR headset built for the AI era

Samsung has unveiled its latest innovation, the Galaxy XR, a cutting-edge headset designed to revolutionize immersive experiences in work, entertainment, and exploration. Announced in Seoul, this device heralds the advent of the Android XR ecosystem, created in partnership with Google and Qualcomm Technologies. As the inaugural product of the new Android XR platform, the Galaxy XR seamlessly integrates advanced artificial intelligence with extended reality (XR) technology, enabling users to interact naturally through voice commands, visual cues, and gestures. This launch marks the beginning of Samsung’s ambitious journey into the XR landscape, which will later encompass AI-enhanced glasses and various other formats. "With the Galaxy XR, we are introducing an entirely new ecosystem of mobile devices," stated Won-Joon Choi, Chief Operating Officer of Samsung Electronics’ Mobile eXperience (MX) Business. He emphasized that this headset expands the vision for mobile AI, bringing XR from mere concept to a tangible reality for both users and the industry. Sameer Samat, President of the Android Ecosystem at Google, expressed enthusiasm for the launch, noting that Android XR is the first platform specifically designed for the Gemini era. He highlighted the potential for new avenues of exploration, connection, and creativity unlocked through Samsung’s collaboration. Alex Katouzian, Group GM of Mobile, Compute & XR at Qualcomm Technologies, added that the Galaxy XR exemplifies a future where AI and XR converge to redefine personal computing possibilities. He conveyed excitement about the new use cases the headset will enable across various industries. The Galaxy XR is engineered with multimodal AI capabilities, allowing users to enjoy intuitive interactions that blend visual, auditory, and motion inputs. Equipped with Gemini AI, the headset can assess its environment and respond in a human-like manner. Its advanced sensors and cameras meticulously track head, hand, and eye movements for enhanced precision. Designed for comfort, the headset includes a separate battery pack to lighten the load and a detachable light shield for switching between immersive and standard viewing modes. Furthermore, the Galaxy XR is built upon an open ecosystem, compatible with existing Android applications and adhering to OpenXR standards, which facilitates easy adaptation for developers. In terms of productivity and entertainment, the headset offers remarkable features such as 3D map exploration through Google Maps, gesture-based interaction with YouTube, and the ability to transform 2D photos and videos into 3D experiences. Powered by the Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 chipset, it boasts impressive graphics, on-device AI capabilities, and spatial audio for an engaging user experience. Samsung is also targeting enterprise applications for the Galaxy XR, collaborating with Samsung Heavy Industries to explore virtual training for shipbuilding and productivity enhancements. Partnerships with Qualcomm Technologies will ensure that the headset supports robust solutions for design, training, and remote teamwork. Looking ahead, Samsung’s roadmap for XR technology extends beyond this headset, with plans for AI glasses developed in conjunction with Google and renowned eyewear brands like Warby Parker and Gentle Monster, merging style with cutting-edge functionality. The Galaxy XR will hit the market on October 21 in the US and October 22 in South Korea.
