Samsung has carved a niche in the foldable phone market over the years, with devices that traditionally fold in half. However, the recently launched Galaxy Z TriFold, which boasts a unique dual-hinge design that expands from a compact phone size to a 10-inch tablet, is now facing an abrupt end to its sales. Just three months post-launch, Samsung has announced that it will cease sales of the Galaxy Z TriFold, starting with its home market of South Korea, where it debuted in December 2025. The TriFold made its way to U.S. consumers in January, but its availability will soon diminish as stocks are depleted. Despite the device's premium price tag of $2,899, Samsung had been selling every unit it could manufacture, indicating strong initial demand. The company's website even hinted at restocks until recently, and eager buyers were willing to pay above the manufacturer's suggested retail price on the secondary market. While Samsung has not publicly stated why it is discontinuing the TriFold, the rising costs of components likely played a significant role. The device features a hefty 16GB of RAM and 512GB of storage in its base model, which may have squeezed profit margins, especially as prices for storage and memory continue to climb. Maintaining profitability on such a high-priced item was already a challenge, and raising prices further could have damaged Samsung's brand image. Ultimately, the Galaxy Z TriFold was a showcase of technological prowess rather than a mass-market product, catering to a limited audience willing to invest in a folding phone at a steep price. As Samsung shifts focus, it may be wiser to allocate resources to its other flagship devices, such as the newly launched Galaxy S26 Ultra, which is reportedly experiencing robust sales despite its own premium pricing.
