Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 review: Slimmer, smarter and finally ready

After an extensive month of testing the Galaxy Z Fold 7, it’s clear that Samsung has made significant strides in the foldable smartphone arena. This latest iteration feels like the most polished version yet. The moment you hold it, the enhancements are apparent. It’s not only thinner and lighter but also boasts a more robust construction. Weighing in at just 215 grams, it approaches the feel of a traditional smartphone when closed, yet when unfolded, it reveals an impressive 8-inch display. The design features a sturdy hinge and a nearly invisible crease, contributing to a sleek appearance. While the removal of S Pen support may disappoint some users, it results in a thinner and more resilient screen. Both displays are exceptional; the outer 6.5-inch AMOLED is ideal for calls, texting, and photography, while the inner screen continues to be the main attraction. Enjoying videos or multitasking on the stunning QXGA+ AMOLED display, with its 120Hz refresh rate and 2,600-nit peak brightness, is a true delight. Performance remains top-notch, powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy and 12 GB of RAM. The Fold 7 handles tasks with ease—there's no lag, apps transition fluidly, and multitasking feels seamless. I often used YouTube alongside Docs and email without a hitch. One UI 8 is adeptly tailored for the foldable format, featuring a consistent taskbar, enhanced Flex Mode, and practical AI tools like on-device transcription and intelligent photo editing, all running atop Android 16. This time, the synergy between software and hardware is evident. The camera system has also advanced significantly, with the 200 MP main sensor taking the lead. It captures sharp, well-balanced images across various lighting conditions. Low-light performance is markedly improved, and the 3x telephoto lens excels in portrait shots. While the ultrawide lens struggles a bit in challenging lighting, the Fold 7 overall no longer compromises on camera quality. Battery life is another area where the Fold 7 impresses. Its 4,400 mAh battery easily lasts a full day, thanks to enhanced chip efficiency. However, charging speeds could be better, with support limited to 25W wired and 15W wireless, which may feel slow compared to current standards. Despite this, it didn’t detract from my overall experience. Priced at ₹1,74,999, the Fold 7 is on the higher end, especially with competitors like Vivo’s X Fold 5 offering lower prices. However, Vivo’s model runs on older hardware and lacks the mature ecosystem that Samsung provides. With the Fold 7, users can expect seven years of software updates, excellent integration with other Galaxy products, and a level of software refinement that finally matches its hardware capabilities. This device is no longer just a novelty but a foldable smartphone ready for everyday use, poised to replace your tablet altogether.
