Samsung SmartThings adds Matter camera support: All details

Samsung has unveiled a significant update to its SmartThings platform, introducing support for Matter 1.5. This enhancement allows users to integrate Matter-compatible cameras from various third-party brands, broadening the spectrum of smart-home devices that can be managed from a single application on their smartphones. The forthcoming software update, scheduled for release this month, will empower users to connect and oversee a diverse array of smart devices, including lights, appliances, sensors, and now, an expanded selection of cameras. The Matter 1.5 standard, revealed by the Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA) last November, includes advanced functionalities such as the operation of blinds, awnings, and garage doors, alongside improved energy management features. This latest version of Matter accommodates a variety of camera types, such as indoor and outdoor security cameras and video doorbells. Users will benefit from features like live streaming, two-way audio, motion detection, event history, and control options that include pan, tilt, and zoom capabilities. In a bid to enhance the ecosystem, Samsung is collaborating with renowned IoT device manufacturers, including Aqara, Eve, and Ulticam, to develop security cameras compliant with the Matter standard. This partnership aims to ensure seamless compatibility across various smart-home platforms, with product launches expected to begin in March 2026. With the introduction of Matter support, users can look forward to a wider selection of camera brands and models that easily integrate into the SmartThings app, alleviating common setup and compatibility challenges. This update not only simplifies home monitoring, but also allows for personalized routines, such as triggering actions through smart doorbells when motion is detected, ultimately enhancing the user experience in smart home management.
