Samsung steps up ‘Make in India’ game, begins laptop manufacturing at Noida unit

Samsung has officially commenced the production of laptops at its Greater Noida facility, marking a significant enhancement of its manufacturing capabilities in India. Sources close to the development revealed that the South Korean tech giant, renowned for its wide range of electronic devices, has now added laptops to the product mix already being produced at this site, which includes feature phones, smartphones, wearables, and tablets. This move aligns with Samsung's broader strategy to increase its manufacturing portfolio in the country. Following discussions with executives from Samsung Southwest Asia, Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw highlighted the company's commitment to expanding its production of advanced technology devices in India, fueled by local talent and innovative capabilities. Since establishing operations in India in 1996, Samsung has been a pioneer among global electronics manufacturers setting up local production bases. Earlier this year, TM Roh, the President and Head of Samsung’s Mobile eXperience Business, had indicated that the company was gearing up to manufacture laptops domestically. Samsung currently operates its second-largest mobile manufacturing facility globally in India and stands as the country’s second-largest handset exporter, trailing only Apple. While it has secured a strong position in the smartphone market, holding the second spot in terms of both volume and value, the company is now making strides to establish a significant presence in the laptop segment. Additionally, Samsung ranks second in the tablet market, boasting a 27% market share, as reported by CyberMedia Research. The recent growth in India’s tablet market, which surged by 20% year-on-year in the June 2025 quarter, has been bolstered by the success of models like the Galaxy Tab A9 Plus 5G, which accounted for a substantial portion of its tablet shipments.
