Samsung is reportedly contemplating a significant transformation in the AI capabilities of its forthcoming Galaxy S26 series, slated for release in early 2026. The tech giant, which currently leans on Google's Gemini AI, is engaged in discussions with various vendors, including OpenAI and Perplexity, as revealed by a senior executive's remarks to Bloomberg News. Choi Won-Joon, President and COO of Samsung’s Mobile eXperience division, emphasized the company's commitment to enhancing user flexibility and choice in AI agents. "We are in talks with multiple vendors. As long as these AI agents can deliver competitive performance and superior user experiences, we are open to exploring all options," Choi stated. Among the prominent names in Samsung’s AI negotiations is Perplexity, a startup recognized for its innovative AI-driven search engine. Reports indicate that Samsung is nearing a deal to integrate Perplexity’s technology into its Galaxy ecosystem. This integration could introduce features within the Samsung Internet browser and potentially enhance Bixby, Samsung’s voice assistant. Additionally, there are indications that Samsung and Perplexity may collaborate on an ‘AI-infused’ operating system and a dedicated app for AI agents, allowing users to select from various assistants, including OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google Gemini. While software developments are progressing, the hardware specifications for the Galaxy S26 remain uncertain. Bloomberg notes that Samsung has yet to finalize whether it will utilize its proprietary Exynos 2600 chip or Qualcomm’s forthcoming Snapdragon 8 Elite 2, expected to be unveiled in September. The recent launch of the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Galaxy Z Flip 7 featured a mix of chipsets, suggesting Samsung may continue its strategy of region-based chip differentiation. Adding to the competitive dynamics, Samsung might soon face opposition from Apple in the foldable smartphone market. Analysts speculate that Apple’s first foldable iPhone could debut in 2026, potentially featuring 'crease-free' displays supplied by Samsung Display, which could give Samsung a supply chain edge amid intensifying software competition.
