Shares of Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix took a hit on Monday following reports of their staggering investment plans, projected to exceed $1.3 trillion. Samsung's stock fell by 4.7%, while SK Hynix experienced a decline of 3.1%. According to the Korea Economic Daily, both companies are set to reveal their ambitious investment strategies during a government briefing scheduled for 2 p.m. local time on Monday, led by President Lee Jae Myung. This significant announcement comes on the heels of a report from Maeil Business Newspaper, which indicated that Samsung Group would unveil a separate investment initiative valued at 1,000 trillion won ($646 billion) over the next ten years. The proposed decade-long investment encompasses various sectors, including semiconductor fabrication facilities, AI data centers, advanced packaging, batteries, and display technologies. Notably, Samsung plans to allocate approximately 300 trillion won towards new fabs in southwestern South Korea, 360 trillion won for the Yongin semiconductor cluster, and over 350 trillion won for AI data centers. However, the details regarding potential overlaps in these figures remain unclear. As both Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix position themselves at the forefront of the booming artificial intelligence sector, the demand for high-bandwidth memory chips continues to surge, outstripping supply as tech firms and cloud providers ramp up their AI infrastructure. SK Hynix stands out as the primary supplier of advanced HBM chips to Nvidia, while Samsung has been making significant investments to close the technological gap with its competitor.
