Samsung has unveiled ambitious plans to construct a cutting-edge artificial intelligence (AI) 'megafactory' in collaboration with US semiconductor giant Nvidia. This project, announced on Friday and covered by Focus Taiwan, seeks to weave AI into the very fabric of Samsung's semiconductor manufacturing ecosystem. The proposed factory will leverage over 50,000 Nvidia GPUs, functioning as an 'intelligent manufacturing platform' designed to analyze, predict, and optimize chip production processes in real time. A Samsung representative emphasized that the AI Factory transcends conventional automation, as it interprets massive data generated throughout chip design, manufacturing, and equipment operation. This initiative represents the latest advancement in a 25-year partnership between Samsung and Nvidia, which originally began with Samsung providing DRAM chips for Nvidia’s first-generation graphics cards. The collaboration has since evolved to encompass foundry services and memory technologies. Current joint ventures include developing HBM4, Nvidia’s upcoming high-bandwidth memory, utilizing Samsung’s sixth-generation 10nm-class DRAM and 4nm logic base die. Samsung aims to enhance its HBM, GDDR, and SOCAMM offerings while continuing to provide foundry services to foster innovation and scalability across the global AI ecosystem. Central to the new AI factory will be Nvidia’s Omniverse and Cuda-X platforms, enabling Samsung to create digital twins of entire chip fabrication facilities. These virtual representations will simulate real-world factory conditions, allowing engineers to experiment with new methods, anticipate maintenance requirements, and fine-tune processes without disrupting actual production. Additionally, Samsung plans to utilize Nvidia’s cuLitho software to accelerate computational lithography, a critical step in chip fabrication that affects circuit accuracy. The company anticipates a performance increase of up to 20 times, facilitating quicker design iterations and higher chip output. Beyond chip design and lithography advancements, Samsung intends to harness Nvidia’s AI technologies for robotics and automation. The company will deploy RTX Pro 6000 Blackwell Server Edition GPUs to enhance the capabilities of humanoid robots and utilize Jetson Thor modules for real-time AI processing in its smart robotic platforms. The collaboration will also venture into AI-boosted mobile networks. By co-developing AI-RAN technology, Samsung and Nvidia aim to empower edge devices—such as drones and industrial robots—to process data locally with GPU acceleration, thereby minimizing latency and improving operational efficiency. Samsung asserts that this AI-driven mobile network will be pivotal in facilitating the widespread integration of physical AI. The AI factory infrastructure is set to extend across Samsung's semiconductor plants globally, including a new chip facility in Taylor, Texas. This initiative underscores Samsung's ambition to lead in all semiconductor sectors: memory, logic, foundry, and advanced packaging. Currently, Samsung’s proprietary AI models already support over 400 million consumer devices. With the introduction of its Megatron framework, the company plans to embed similar AI capabilities into its manufacturing systems, enabling intelligent summarization, multilingual interaction, and advanced reasoning across production lines. A Samsung official remarked that this development marks a significant milestone in their quest to spearhead the global transition towards AI-driven manufacturing.
