Samsung and Google attempt to one-up Apple with AI-powered headset

The smartphone revolution ignited by the iPhone over 17 years ago continues to inspire tech giants to innovate and disrupt the market. The latest entrant to this competitive arena is Samsung, which has introduced its Galaxy XR, a mixed reality headset set to launch at a price point of $1,800—significantly lower than Apple’s Vision Pro. This new headset, developed in collaboration with Google and powered by Qualcomm's advanced chip technology, promises an immersive virtual computing environment. Users can expect their applications and digital content to float seamlessly within their field of view. Furthermore, external cameras project the real world onto the headset's high-resolution 4K displays, allowing users to navigate their surroundings without obstruction. Control of the Galaxy XR is intuitive; it can be operated through hand gestures, voice commands, or a combination of both. Upon first glance, the design bears a striking resemblance to the Apple Vision Pro, featuring curved glass, metal accents, and an external battery pack connected by a cable. Many observers note that it appears Samsung has closely studied its competitor over the past two years. Despite the excitement, the market for such devices remains niche. Historically, high-priced headsets have struggled to find a widespread audience, as there remains a lack of compelling applications and immersive content to justify the investment. The initial promise of the metaverse faded with the rise of AI technologies, shifting industry focus away from virtual reality solutions. Samsung's strategy for the Galaxy XR, however, positions it as a precursor to a new generation of AI-powered glasses currently in development with eyewear brands like Warby Parker and Gentle Monster. These forthcoming devices will leverage Google's Gemini AI assistant, which is also integral to the Galaxy XR experience. Google demonstrated an early prototype of these glasses at its I/O event, yet no official release date has been announced. During a recent demonstration in New York, Samsung showcased the capabilities of the Galaxy XR, particularly highlighting its Gemini assistant. Users were able to manage floating app windows, inquire about locations via Google Maps, and generate creative videos using Google's AI video tool, Veo. The Gemini assistant performed impressively, accurately recognizing commands even in a bustling environment—a feature that sets it apart from the Vision Pro, which lacks generative AI functionalities. While the potential for AI in eyewear is clear, privacy concerns loom large. Gemini operates in the cloud, necessitating users to grant it access to their activities, which may deter privacy-conscious consumers. Unlike Apple's secure private cloud technology, Google’s current framework may expose users to greater risks regarding personal data. As the market for AI-powered glasses develops, they remain a far cry from becoming an essential tech accessory akin to smartphones or smartwatches. Meta, for instance, sold only 2 million pairs of its Ray-Ban glasses in the first two years, a stark contrast to Apple's annual sales of over 200 million iPhones. While the capabilities of Gemini are promising, the vision of replacing smartphones with AI-driven eyewear still seems distant.
