AI boom pushes Samsung to $1T

Samsung has marked a significant milestone by reaching a $1 trillion valuation, following a remarkable surge of over 10% in its share prices on Wednesday. This achievement places Samsung as only the second Asian company to attain such a valuation, following TSMC. The rise in share prices is largely attributed to the booming demand for chips spurred by the current artificial intelligence craze. The company recently reported earnings that were eight times greater than those from the same quarter last year, further solidifying its financial success. As every entity involved in AI development requires chips, Samsung's production of memory chips has become crucial. The demand for these chips is skyrocketing, yet supply is struggling to keep pace, causing prices to rise and significantly enhancing Samsung's profit margins. Additionally, a noteworthy factor contributing to the share price increase is the revelation that Apple is in discussions with both Samsung and Intel regarding the manufacturing of chips for its devices within the United States. Historically, Apple has relied predominantly on TSMC in Taiwan for chip production. Securing this deal would represent a pivotal shift in the global semiconductor landscape. Central to Samsung's profit surge is high-bandwidth memory (HBM), a chip type vital for AI systems, which has led to remarkable improvements in the company's profit margins. However, competition remains fierce, with rival SK Hynix intensifying efforts to capture market share in the same domain, compelling Samsung to maintain its competitive edge. The AI boom has also triggered a significant chip shortage across the semiconductor industry. The three largest memory chip manufacturers—Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron—are grappling to meet the overwhelming demand from AI data centers. All three have redirected investments away from consumer chip production to enhance HBM output, which offers significantly higher margins and is essential for large-scale AI infrastructure. Despite this historic growth, Samsung faces challenges ahead. Workers have threatened a strike lasting 18 days later this month, seeking a larger share of the profits generated by the AI surge. At the same time, Samsung’s divisions that produce phones and TVs are feeling the impact of rising costs for the very memory chips that are fueling the company's record profits.
