During a recent court appearance, Sam Altman disclosed that his investment in the nuclear energy startup Helion has surged to over $1.6 billion. This marks a significant increase from the $375 million he initially invested in November 2021 during the company's Series E funding round. His testimony revealed the extent of his financial interests, particularly as he navigated questions about OpenAI's for-profit ventures. One of the key documents presented during the trial illustrated Altman's extensive holdings in various tech startups. He confirmed that his stake in Helion, which he first invested in back in 2015, is substantial, estimating that he owns roughly one-third of the company and also holds warrants to acquire additional shares. In addition to Helion, Altman's financial portfolio includes impressive stakes in other companies, such as $632 million in Stripe, a leading fintech firm, and $258 million in Retro Biosciences, which focuses on anti-aging research. His investments also extend to smaller firms, including $19 million in Trialspark, now rebranded as Formation Bio, and $3 million in Cerebras, an AI chipmaker gearing up for its IPO. The trial has brought Altman's investments into the spotlight, particularly as Elon Musk alleges that Altman and his co-founders have misused charitable funds from a foundation Musk helped launch in 2015. Musk's legal team is questioning whether Altman's financial interests create conflicts of interest, particularly concerning a potential power purchasing agreement between Helion and OpenAI. As the questioning intensified, Altman was asked about his dual role in the negotiations. While he acknowledged discussing the deal with OpenAI, he asserted that he recused himself from the decision-making process, stressing that he did not sign the agreement. This prompted further inquiries from Musk's attorney regarding Altman's previous ties to Reddit, where he served as interim CEO and held a significant stake prior to its IPO in March 2024. The attorney pointed out the potential conflict of interest regarding a subsequent content licensing deal between Reddit and OpenAI, to which Altman admitted to having navigated a recusal process. The courtroom exchanges continue, with Altman's financial dealings at the center of a debate over ethical boundaries in tech investments.
