Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, has decided to resign from his position on the board of Helion Energy, a fusion startup, as the two companies embark on a significant partnership. Since 2025, Altman has been a supporter of Helion, which is now gearing up for a substantial energy supply agreement. The CEO of Helion, David Kirtley, confirmed Altman's departure from the Board of Directors in a post on X (formerly Twitter). He emphasized that Helion and OpenAI are now exploring collaborative efforts to deliver safe, zero-carbon electricity on a global scale, an area where Helion is well-equipped to lead. Kirtley expressed gratitude for Altman’s contributions over the years, stating, "Sam, thank you for your vision, your encouragement, and your commitment to Helion. I look forward to working with you in this new capacity." In his own response, Altman acknowledged the need to step down due to potential conflicts of interest arising from the developing partnership. He noted, "I will have a financial interest in Helion, so I'll need to recuse myself from negotiations, but this change will simplify governance for both companies." Altman conveyed his ongoing enthusiasm for Helion’s mission, stating, "I have loved being on the Helion board; I continue to be extremely excited about a future with abundant energy, especially with Helion." As discussions progress, Axios reports that OpenAI is negotiating to purchase electricity from Helion, potentially securing a share of Helion’s power production. Initial projections suggest that OpenAI could obtain approximately 12.5% of Helion’s total energy output, with expectations to ramp up to 5 GW by 2030 and up to 50 GW by 2035. Notably, Microsoft has already initiated a similar agreement with Helion to acquire power starting in 2028. Helion is on track to develop the first commercially viable fusion reactor, which, if successful, could position the company at the forefront of fusion energy innovation.
