What 'terrifies' Sam Altman about today's banks

Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, recently addressed a gathering of financial regulators and industry experts, emphasizing the urgent need for banks to outsmart the very technology he has helped develop. During his remarks at a Federal Reserve event in Washington, D.C., Altman expressed deep concern over the vulnerability of financial institutions to artificial intelligence, warning that they risk losing their clients' assets if they fail to adapt. "What terrifies me is that some financial institutions are still using voice prints for authentication when processing significant transactions," Altman stated. He criticized this practice as outdated, noting that AI has already surpassed most current authentication methods, with the exception of passwords. Altman cautioned that without substantial changes in how banks verify identities and secure systems, we may be heading toward a "significant impending fraud crisis" driven by advancements in AI. He reiterated the importance of evolving societal norms around security and verification processes, underscoring that these are critical issues that demand immediate attention. In a Q&A session, Altman shared his worries about potential large-scale financial attacks. He speculated that adversaries might leverage powerful AI technologies to orchestrate attacks on U.S. financial systems or even employ bioweapons against the nation. He stressed that defeating an adversary equipped with advanced AI would be exceptionally challenging. Altman's concerns echo a broader sentiment within the financial sector. A recent survey by Accenture revealed that 80% of 600 bank cybersecurity leaders believe that generative AI is enabling hackers to outpace their defenses, highlighting an urgent need for innovation in security measures.
