In a recent discussion, Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, brushed aside Elon Musk's claims suggesting that OpenAI might overshadow Microsoft. This remark came after the announcement that OpenAI's latest model would be integrated into various Microsoft products, including Microsoft 365 Copilot and Azure AI Foundry. During a press event, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella revealed the upcoming launch of OpenAI's GPT-5, which elicited a dramatic response from Musk, who remarked that "OpenAI is going to eat Microsoft alive." Nadella, however, attempted to mitigate the concerns, stating, "People have been trying for 50 years and that's the fun of it! Each day you learn something new, and innovate, partner, and compete." He also expressed enthusiasm for Musk's Grok 4 chatbot, currently available in a limited preview on Azure. When addressing Musk's comments on CNBC's "Squawk Box," Altman stated, "You know, I don't think about him that much." He further questioned the implications of Musk's statements and referred to the tech mogul’s frequent criticisms of OpenAI, suggesting that Musk spends considerable time on social media lamenting about the company’s direction. The rivalry between Altman and Musk has been marked by public disagreements, particularly regarding the vision for OpenAI, which they co-founded in 2015 as a nonprofit. OpenAI has since shifted towards a for-profit model, capitalizing on the surging popularity of its ChatGPT product, with Microsoft emerging as a key investor. Musk, who previously filed a lawsuit against OpenAI for contract breaches, recently attempted to acquire the nonprofit for $97.4 billion, a proposal that Altman declined with a pointed response on social media.
