Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, has addressed recent remarks made by Elon Musk, who suggested that OpenAI could outpace Microsoft in the AI race. This commentary came on the heels of OpenAI's launch of its latest model, GPT-5. Musk, who founded xAI and is behind the Grok-4 chatbot, emphasized his belief in Grok's superiority, while also cautioning Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella about the partnership with OpenAI. In an interview with CNBC, Altman was questioned about Musk's provocative statements. His response was pointed: "You know, I don't think about him that much." When asked to elaborate on Musk's suggestion that OpenAI would 'eat Microsoft alive,' Altman remarked, "I thought he was just, like, tweeting all day about how much OpenAI sucks, and our model is bad, and, you know, we’re not gonna be a good company and all that. I don't know how you square up two things." This isn't the first time Altman has reacted strongly to Musk's comments. Earlier this year, he expressed concern for Musk's well-being, stating, "Elon's whole life is from a position of insecurity. I feel for the guy. I do actually. I don't think he's a happy person." In the midst of this public spat, Satya Nadella also chimed in, sharing his thoughts on Musk's tweets. He stated, "People have been trying for 50 years, and that’s the fun of it! Each day you learn something new, and innovate, partner, and compete. Excited for Grok 4 on Azure and looking forward to Grok 5!" The relationship between Musk and OpenAI is complex. Musk was one of the co-founders of the organization back in 2015, but over the years, differing visions for the future of the company led to his resignation from the board in 2018. Meanwhile, Microsoft has emerged as a significant investor in OpenAI, supporting its journey to success since the public debut of its AI models in late 2022. In response to the evolving landscape of AI, Musk established his own venture, xAI, which is focused on developing the Grok AI chatbot. Despite this, he has continued to voice criticisms against OpenAI and its leaders, even initiating several lawsuits against the organization, alleging that OpenAI has violated agreements by prioritizing profit over the welfare of humanity.
