Sam Altman says parenting changed his view on iPads — and that he wants his son to 'play in the dirt'

Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, has shared his evolving perspective on technology, particularly regarding his role as a parent. Welcoming his son in 2025, Altman has been vocal about his insights on raising children in a tech-dominated world. During a recent episode of the "Mostly Human" podcast, he expressed his desire for his son to engage with the natural world, stating, "I want him to play in the dirt for now." Altman highlighted how becoming a father has influenced his views on technology, particularly algorithm-driven platforms and the pervasive 'infinite scroll'. Observing children slightly older than his son, he noted his concern over their dependence on devices like iPads. "You cannot take the iPad away from them," he remarked, emphasizing the importance of moderation in tech use. While many young individuals utilize ChatGPT as a study aid or a virtual confidant, Altman is cautious about when his child will interact with AI. He expressed a preference for a delayed introduction to technology, saying he wants to be "on the late end of what's reasonable." Host Laurie Segall chimed in, sharing her own struggles as a parent navigating technology's impact on children. Altman referred to notable tech figures like Google CEO Sundar Pichai and Bill Gates, who also limited their children's access to devices during their formative years. Looking ahead, Altman envisions a future where education incorporates technology in a balanced manner. He described a model featuring personalized AI tutoring followed by practical projects, stating, "That seems great," while also acknowledging potential pitfalls. Despite his cautious approach to parenting, Altman regularly relies on AI in his own life. He recounted a situation where he consulted ChatGPT for guidance on developmental milestones, receiving reassurance that his son was progressing normally. However, Altman's commitment to ensuring the safety of AI technology remains steadfast. When questioned about feeling a greater responsibility in light of fatherhood, he asserted that preventing catastrophic outcomes has always been his foremost priority. "I knew I was going to have kids," Altman reflected, considering the world his children will inherit.
