In a recent interview, OpenAI's CEO, Sam Altman, revealed his thoughts on a potential career shift as artificial intelligence continues to evolve. Rather than pursuing another tech startup, Altman expressed a desire to return to his farming roots. "I believe there will come a time when AI could outperform me as CEO of OpenAI, and I would embrace that change wholeheartedly," he shared with Mathias Döpfner, CEO of Axel Springer. Altman mentioned his passion for agriculture, stating, "I have a farm where I spend part of my time, and it brings me immense joy." Despite his high-profile investments in stunning properties across San Francisco, Napa Valley, and a $43 million estate in Hawaii, his heart seems to gravitate towards the simplicity of farm life. Before the explosive growth of ChatGPT, he fondly recalled having more time to engage with farming activities, like driving tractors and harvesting crops. These reflections aren't merely idle thoughts from a tech executive seeking an escape. With a keen insight into AI advancements, Altman believes the moment when machines surpass human intelligence is nearing. He pointed out that while many jobs will be lost in the short term due to AI, history shows that every technological revolution eventually leads to new opportunities. "The future jobs will likely focus on enhancing human connections and caring for one another," he stated. Altman emphasized that humanity's unique trait lies not in intellectual prowess but in our capacity for empathy. "As a society, we possess an undeniable essence that transcends machines, even if they become more intelligent than us," he noted. Recently awarded the Axel Springer Award, Altman also predicted that by 2030, AI will have developed capabilities that could astonish us. He expressed anticipation for significant advancements in the next few years, stating, "If we don't witness extraordinary models by the end of this decade, I would be quite surprised." He further added that if the pace of progress seen in 2024 and 2025 doesn't continue into 2026, it would also be unexpected.
