Sam Altman wants an AI to replace him as OpenAI CEO

Since the launch of ChatGPT in late 2022, concerns have surged over the potential job displacement caused by artificial intelligence. While many professions are highlighted as vulnerable, the role of CEO typically appears secure. However, OpenAI's CEO, Sam Altman, expressed an intriguing ambition during a recent episode of the "Conversations with Tyler" podcast: he wants OpenAI to be the pioneering firm led by an AI. Altman declared, "Shame on me if OpenAI is not the first big company run by an AI CEO." He elaborated on this concept as a captivating thought experiment, pondering what changes would be necessary for an AI to outperform him in leading the company. He suggested that while AI-driven management is still a way off, advancements could enable AI to effectively oversee entire departments within just a few years. Despite his optimistic outlook, Altman acknowledged the hurdles that lie ahead for AI to take on the CEO role. He pointed out that people inherently place more trust in fellow humans rather than machines, even when data might suggest otherwise. "People have a great deal higher trust in other people over AI, even if they shouldn't, even if that's irrational," he noted, recognizing that societal acceptance of AI leadership could take longer than anticipated. This isn't the first time Altman has contemplated the possibility of AI usurping his position. In a previous discussion with Axel Springer CEO Mathias Döpfner, he remarked, "It doesn’t scare me, it doesn’t make me sad. It’s just like I did this one thing that has been automated, and I wanted it to be automated, and that’s kind of what we’re doing." Looking beyond his tenure at OpenAI, Altman shared a glimpse into his future aspirations, mentioning his enjoyment of life on a farm and the fulfillment it brings him. He described this lifestyle change as a refreshing shift, highlighting the joy of engaging with nature on a deeper level.
