Sam Altman hopes AGI will allow people to have more kids in the future

Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, recently shared his views on the intersection of artificial general intelligence (AGI) and family life, emphasizing the potential AGI holds for encouraging population growth. Altman, who welcomed his first child this year, described parenthood as a profoundly fulfilling experience and advocates for more people to embrace it. In a candid conversation on the podcast "People by WTF" with Nikhil Kamath, Altman expressed concern over the declining birth rates, particularly among younger generations in the United States. Many millennials and Gen Z individuals are postponing parenthood, focusing instead on financial stability, a trend Altman believes poses a significant challenge for society. He anticipates that advancements in AGI could transform the landscape of family life. Altman envisions a future where AGI enables greater abundance, freeing up time and resources for individuals, ultimately leading to a renewed emphasis on family and community. He stated, "I think it's pretty clear that family and community are two of the things that make us the happiest, and I hope we will turn back to that." Reflecting on his own experiences, Altman noted that using AI tools has been instrumental in his journey as a new parent. He humorously mentioned that during the initial weeks of fatherhood, he found himself frequently consulting ChatGPT for advice. "My kids will never be smarter than AI," he remarked, highlighting his belief that future generations will be equipped with skills that far exceed current capabilities, particularly in utilizing AI. Altman isn't alone in advocating for procreation within the tech industry. Elon Musk, another influential figure in AI, has publicly addressed the issue of declining birth rates, emphasizing the urgency of the situation. Musk has fathered multiple children and has stated that he is actively contributing to alleviating the underpopulation crisis. As the conversation around AGI and its societal implications continues, Altman remains optimistic that it will pave the way for a future where families thrive, and communities flourish.
