Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, has expressed concerns over the widely-used messaging platform Slack, labeling it as a contributor to what he terms 'fake work.' During a discussion on the Conversations with Tyler YouTube channel, Altman shared his frustrations, stating, "There are positives about Slack, but I often feel a sense of dread when I start my day and just before I go to bed, overwhelmed by the sheer volume of messages." He went on to propose that an AI-driven alternative could replace not only Slack but also other traditional productivity tools, such as those found in Microsoft Office. Altman believes that a new, innovative solution is on the horizon, one that could redefine the way office productivity is approached. "I suspect there is something new to build that will replace the current productivity suite—be it Docs, Slides, emails, or Slack. The future lies in AI-driven versions of these tools," he asserted. Altman's comments provided an opening for Elon Musk to reiterate his warnings regarding Microsoft. In response to a clip of Altman's remarks, Musk tweeted, "As I was saying, OpenAI will compete directly with Microsoft," deeming it "insanely suicidal for Microsoft to continue supporting OpenAI." This exchange adds to a growing tension between Musk and Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, especially following the earlier launch of GPT-5. Musk had previously cautioned Nadella that OpenAI could significantly disrupt Microsoft's market share. He remarked, "OpenAI is going to eat Microsoft alive," to which Nadella had responded, emphasizing the continuous cycle of learning and innovation in the tech space. OpenAI has been actively releasing new products that directly compete with Microsoft offerings, including features integrated within ChatGPT. Meanwhile, Musk is pursuing his own AI initiatives, including a project dubbed 'Macrohard,' aimed at challenging Microsoft. His company, xAI, is also working on the Grok AI chatbot, which seeks to carve out its own niche in the competitive AI landscape. Despite these developments, Microsoft continues to leverage OpenAI's models to enhance its AI features across platforms, including Bing and Office applications. However, the tech giant has started to explore alternatives, such as Claude AI, for some of its recent Office features.
