In a recent interview, OpenAI founder Sam Altman publicly addressed the tragic death of whistleblower Suchir Balaji for the first time. Describing the incident as 'a great tragedy,' Altman engaged in a heated discussion with former Fox News host Tucker Carlson, who challenged the official ruling of suicide, claiming it was a murder. Balaji, a researcher of Indian descent, was discovered deceased in his San Francisco apartment in November 2024, just weeks after he leveled accusations against OpenAI regarding copyright violations. While the police determined that the 27-year-old's death was a suicide, his family has voiced concerns about the investigation, asserting that he was murdered. During the interview, Carlson highlighted Balaji's complaints, questioning Altman about the implications of a programmer's death following allegations of wrongdoing within the company. 'You had complaints from one programmer who said you guys were basically stealing people’s stuff and not paying them, and then he wound up murdered. What was that?' he asked. Altman reiterated his stance, stating, 'Also a great tragedy. He committed suicide.' When Carlson pressed for more details, Altman maintained his connection to Balaji, saying, 'He was like a friend of mine. This is someone that worked at OpenAI for a very long time. I was really shaken by this tragedy… It looks like a suicide to me.' However, Carlson continued to dispute this conclusion, pointing to alleged evidence of foul play, such as signs of a struggle and cut surveillance wires. He argued, 'He was definitely murdered, I think,' and noted that Balaji’s mother shares this belief. Altman, unfazed by the accusations, stated, 'I haven’t done too many interviews where I’ve been accused of murder… You understand how this sounds like an accusation?' Despite Carlson's persistent inquiries, Altman remained firm in his belief that the official findings were accurate, emphasizing that he had thoroughly examined the circumstances surrounding Balaji's death. Balaji's mother, Poornima Ramarao, has fiercely contested the suicide ruling, claiming, 'Everybody is suppressed. Nobody is ready to come up and tell the truth. Even the attorneys have been made to tell that it is a suicide.'
