Sam Altman says OpenAI is not the 'moral police' after ChatGPT news 'blew up on the erotica point'

In a recent announcement, OpenAI's CEO Sam Altman expressed surprise at the intense reactions following his update on ChatGPT's upcoming features, particularly regarding adult content. He highlighted that the discussion around the inclusion of erotica "blew up" more than he anticipated. Altman clarified that this addition, set to launch by December, is aimed at enhancing user freedom for adults. He emphasized that it is merely one example of how OpenAI plans to expand its offerings, putting it in competition with other AI platforms like Grok from Elon Musk's xAI, which also focus on generating adult-themed content. Importantly, Altman asserted that existing policies surrounding mental health will remain intact. The intention is to provide adult users with more flexibility without compromising safety for younger audiences. He stated, "We are not the elected moral police of the world," likening the approach to how society regulates access to R-rated movies. Despite these assurances, concerns have emerged from critics such as former "Shark Tank" investor Mark Cuban. Cuban warned that the planned age restrictions might not effectively prevent minors from accessing adult material. He remarked on social media, "This is going to backfire. No parent is going to trust that their kids can't get through your age gating." In his comments, Altman also noted that ChatGPT will adopt a distinct approach for users experiencing mental health crises, ensuring that the chatbot does not generate harmful content. However, he did not provide specific examples of what might be considered harmful or how the system would recognize users in distress. OpenAI has yet to respond to inquiries for further clarification on these points. Altman concluded by emphasizing the company's goal to assist users in achieving their long-term objectives without being overly paternalistic.
