Salesforce is enhancing its Slack application by integrating a new generative artificial intelligence feature designed to help users navigate their communications more effectively. This upgrade, which was announced as part of a broader initiative in October, will be accessible to Business+ and Enterprise+ subscribers starting Tuesday. The updated Slackbot leverages Anthropic’s Claude AI model, allowing it to sift through messages, files, and channels while respecting user permissions. According to Salesforce, the bot is designed to assist users in locating pertinent information across various platforms, including Slack, Google Drive, Box, and Atlassian’s Confluence. Despite the rapid expansion of AI technologies across the tech landscape, Salesforce's stock has struggled, declining 18% over the past year, in stark contrast to the Nasdaq’s 24% increase. Parker Harris, Salesforce’s co-founder and technology chief, expressed confidence that large language models are not disrupting cloud software, emphasizing that tools like OpenAI’s ChatGPT are not integrated into corporate systems. Harris noted that the new Slackbot is particularly beneficial for meeting preparation and research, reducing the need for traditional search functions. The feature was inspired by the potential for in-house tools to be utilized by executives, noting that CEO Marc Benioff now relies heavily on Slackbot for various tasks. Slack has seen significant adoption, with millions of users across numerous organizations. Harris highlighted that Slackbot has become the fastest adopted feature in Salesforce’s history, potentially prompting users to shift from Microsoft Teams and reconsider their ChatGPT subscriptions. However, the competitive landscape remains challenging, as seen by the recent hiring of Slack’s CEO by OpenAI. Users like Demetri Salvaggio from Engine have reported that Slackbot saves them valuable time each week, underscoring its effectiveness in managing daily tasks. As Salesforce continues to innovate within its platform, the integration of AI into Slack promises to reshape the way users engage with their work, potentially setting new standards in productivity for enterprise software.
