Founders Fund hires former OpenAI exec Ryan Beiermeister (and not because of her Mafia skills)

Ryan Beiermeister has officially become a partner at Founders Fund, a move she announced on Monday, signaling her intent to influence the next wave of innovative startups in Silicon Valley. Beiermeister, who previously served as VP of Product Policy at OpenAI, gained prominence during the meteoric rise of ChatGPT, which quickly became the fastest-growing app in history. Her tenure at OpenAI came to an unexpected halt in February when she was reportedly dismissed after raising concerns about a controversial feature known as "adult mode"—a function that would have allowed adults to engage with the chatbot for erotic content. Reports indicate that her firing was linked to allegations made by a male colleague regarding sexual discrimination, claims that Beiermeister has vehemently denied as "absolutely false." Notably, OpenAI later decided to abandon the adult mode feature altogether in March. Beyond her corporate experiences, Beiermeister has also gained recognition within the tech community for her strategic gameplay in a Founders Fund YouTube series called "Mafia." This engaging game challenges players to identify hidden Mafia members before they eliminate the rest. Beiermeister faced off against notable figures, including OpenAI's Sam Altman and Figma's Dylan Field, leading to memorable moments, especially in the first episode where she and Altman humorously suggested that the other would be their killer if one of them were found dead. While some observers joked that her participation in the game might have served as an informal job interview, a spokesperson for Founders Fund clarified that her gameplay was not part of the hiring process. Beiermeister has maintained a strong relationship with Trae Stephens, a Founders Fund partner, dating back to their time together at Palantir. In her new role, Beiermeister expressed a keen interest in supporting startups that align with Founders Fund's mission. In a LinkedIn post, she emphasized her focus on sectors where product engineering poses significant challenges and where the stakes are highest, such as AI infrastructure, defense, energy, climate, and biotechnology. "To the founders in these domains, especially if you don’t fit the standard mold: I want to talk to you and my inbox is open," she stated, inviting innovative thinkers to connect with her.
