US Space Command: Russia is now operationalizing co-orbital ASAT weapons

This week, General Stephen Whiting, the commander of US Space Command, revealed alarming developments concerning Russia's advancements in anti-satellite technology. Following a series of tests involving unconventional satellites reminiscent of a ‘nesting doll’ design, Russia has now operationalized its anti-satellite (ASAT) systems, placing critical US government satellites in jeopardy. While General Whiting did not specify the name of the system, it is widely believed he was referencing a Russian military initiative known as Nivelir. This program has seen the deployment of four satellites into orbits that closely track US reconnaissance satellites operated by the National Reconnaissance Office. Once in orbit, the Nivelir satellites have deployed smaller vehicles to execute their own maneuvers. Notably, during a test in 2020, one of these smaller crafts launched a high-speed mystery object, leading US analysts to conclude it was a projectile capable of targeting another satellite. The design of the Nivelir system has drawn comparisons to a Russian Matryoshka doll, where the outer shell conceals smaller components that can engage in various operations. The latest Nivelir satellite was launched in May from the Plesetsk Cosmodrome in northern Russia, with its timing meticulously calculated to coincide with the orbital path of the USA 338 Keyhole-class optical spy satellite. Such precision is characteristic of civilian missions aimed at rendezvousing with the International Space Station, suggesting a deliberate strategy to position these satellites for potential confrontations. General Whiting emphasized that Russia appears to be actively deploying space-based weaponry capable of threatening vital US national security assets. He stated, 'It’s evident Russia was deploying a space weapon there, and they’re putting it into an orbit where they can reach critical US national security satellites.' His remarks highlight concerns that Russia's actions may serve as a provocative challenge in the realm of space security.
