In a dramatic turn of events, a Russian intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) was launched from an underground silo on Friday, intended to deliver a dummy warhead to a target nearly 4,000 miles away. However, the missile failed to even reach 4,000 feet in altitude, resulting in a significant mishap. Witnesses near the Dombarovsky air base in Orenburg Oblast, close to the Russian-Kazakh border, reported seeing and hearing the missile crash shortly after its launch. A video shared on the Russian blog site MilitaryRussia.ru and circulated across various social media platforms captured the missile veering off course almost immediately, spinning uncontrollably before plummeting to the ground close to the launch site. According to Pavel Podvig, a senior researcher at the United Nations Institute for Disarmament Research in Geneva, the missile released a component prior to impact, potentially as part of a payload recovery procedure. The crash was marked by a fireball and the emergence of a toxic reddish-brown cloud, indicative of the hazardous propellants hydrazine and nitrogen tetroxide used in Russia’s most formidable ICBMs. Satellite imagery taken after the incident reveals a crater and burn scar near the missile silo, further highlighting the severity of the failure. Analysts speculate that this test was aimed at Russia's RS-28 Sarmat missile, a system engineered to strike targets over 11,000 miles (18,000 kilometers) away, making it the longest-range missile globally. The Sarmat is a next-generation heavy ICBM designed to carry up to 10 large nuclear warheads or a combination of warheads and countermeasures, positioning it as a critical element in any nuclear confrontation between Russia and the United States.
