In a bid to bolster its military capabilities, Russia is enticing university students with offers of free tuition and financial rewards of up to $70,000 for those willing to serve as drone pilots for a year. This recruitment initiative claims to provide an opportunity to avoid direct combat in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. However, reports have emerged of at least one confirmed battlefield casualty among this new group of student pilots, raising concerns about the true risks involved. Promotional materials advertising these incentives have been spotted at institutions such as the Bauman Moscow State Technical University. Beyond monetary compensation, universities across Russia are offering additional perks, including tax exemptions, loan forgiveness, and even free land. According to an independent publication, Groza, over 270 academic institutions have been involved in promoting military contracts to students since the onset of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. This recruitment drive is particularly targeting the 2 million male students enrolled in Russian universities, including those with technical skills and backgrounds in gaming, which could make them ideal candidates for training as drone operators. The Russian Defense Ministry has explicitly called for recruits with experience in flying drones, model aircraft, electronics, and radio engineering, while computer proficiency is also highly sought after. However, this effort to recruit young talent raises troubling questions about the potential long-term impact on Russia's educated workforce, especially amidst an ongoing brain drain. A recent study indicated that 24% of top Russian software developers on GitHub may have left the country within just a year of the war's escalation. Many students are reportedly disillusioned with the war effort. One student, Andrey, shared his sentiments: “No one wants to join. No one is interested.”
