Russian citizens told “switch to Android” after Apple blocks key Russian apps

In a striking move, the Russian government has urged its citizens to transition to Android devices following Apple’s recent decision to block several key applications. This action stems from a growing trend in which Russia has become the leading nation demanding the removal of apps from the App Store, as highlighted in Apple's 2025 App Store Transparency Report. In 2025 alone, Russia requested the removal of an astounding 1,213 apps, many of which were Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) designed to bypass the country's stringent internet censorship laws. Vietnam followed, requesting the blockage of only 335 apps. The Kremlin is keen on establishing a tightly controlled internet environment, one that favors domestic applications while eliminating those it deems harmful. Notably, the government has expressed a clear preference for keeping Russian-made apps like VKontakte, a social networking platform, and Max, a state-sanctioned messaging service, operational. However, Apple has recently blocked both applications, rendering them inaccessible to iPhone users within Russia. Although existing installations will still function, the removal of push notifications has significantly diminished their utility. Max was removed in early June, followed by VKontakte on June 25. In response to these actions, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov has called for an explanation from Apple regarding the ban on VK apps, emphasizing the government's dissatisfaction with the situation.
