A representative for Russian President Vladimir Putin has reached out to Elon Musk, urging him to consider a groundbreaking project to construct an undersea rail tunnel linking Russia and Alaska. Kirill Dmitriev, who leads Russia's sovereign wealth fund, made this proposal via social media, envisioning a 70-mile tunnel dubbed the 'Putin-Trump Tunnel' that symbolizes unity between nations. Dmitriev claims that while traditional estimates for such a tunnel hover around $65 billion, Musk's Boring Company could potentially slash that price to $8 billion and complete the project within eight years. 'Let's build a future together!' he expressed encouragingly on platform X, formerly known as Twitter. This initiative follows a recent conversation between Putin and former President Donald Trump, where discussions were held about potential resolutions to the ongoing Ukraine War. Trump indicated that key advisors would engage with a Russian delegation next week, laying groundwork for a future meeting with Putin in Budapest. However, the ambitious project poses significant challenges. Constructing an undersea tunnel in the Bering Strait would require navigating extreme below-freezing temperatures, a lack of existing infrastructure, and a seismic environment prone to deep earthquakes. The Boring Company, known for its tunneling in milder climates, has yet to demonstrate experience in such demanding conditions. Additionally, the Boring Company has faced scrutiny over its environmental practices, having been fined for multiple violations in Nevada, including unauthorized digging and improper waste management. Currently, they are engaged in the Music City Loop project, a 10-mile tunnel connecting downtown Nashville to its airport, which has also faced local protests regarding planning concerns. Musk's connections to Russia extend beyond this proposal; Tesla has previously sourced aluminum from a company linked to sanctioned oligarch Oleg Deripaska. Musk and Putin have held discussions in the past, including a controversial request from Putin for SpaceX to limit its services in Taiwan, underscoring the complex relationship between the tech mogul and the Russian leadership. As this dialogue continues, the feasibility of the proposed tunnel remains uncertain, but the ambition behind the project highlights the intersection of technology, geopolitics, and infrastructure development.
