Russia blocks Meta’s WhatsApp, pushing its 100 million+ users to state-backed service

In a significant move towards tighter control over foreign technology, Russia has officially blocked access to WhatsApp as of February 12. This popular messaging platform, owned by Meta, has been removed from the internet directory managed by Roskomnadzor, the country’s communications authority. The Kremlin cited non-compliance with Russian laws as the reason for the ban, a claim that Meta has strongly contested. In response to the block, Russian officials are urging users to transition to a new state-supported messaging service named MAX, advertised as the nation’s official messenger. However, critics are raising alarms, asserting that MAX lacks end-to-end encryption, potentially turning it into a surveillance tool, a claim that the government denies. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed that the decision stemmed from Meta's refusal to adhere to local regulations. This action is part of a broader initiative to establish a “sovereign internet,” compelling foreign tech firms to follow domestic laws or face similar consequences. According to a Financial Times report, Russia has already restricted access to services like Facebook, Instagram, and portions of YouTube, which can now primarily be accessed through virtual private networks (VPNs). WhatsApp expressed its concerns on social media, stating that cutting off over 100 million users from secure communication represents a regressive step that could jeopardize safety for individuals in Russia. The ban on WhatsApp follows a series of increasing restrictions on other messaging platforms, including Telegram, which officials claim are necessary to enforce compliance with local laws and address extremist content. Critics argue that these measures are aimed at minimizing foreign influence and enhancing state control over digital communications.
