Russia's state communications regulator has officially banned Apple's FaceTime video calling application, citing concerns over its alleged use in criminal activities. This move is part of a larger initiative to curb foreign technology platforms within the country, according to a report by Reuters. The Russian authorities assert that FaceTime has been misappropriated for organizing terrorist attacks, recruiting individuals, and perpetrating fraud against its citizens. In addition to FaceTime, the government has also placed a ban on Snapchat for similar alleged offenses. The State internet regulator, Roskomnadzor, communicated these claims via email, although it did not provide any concrete evidence to substantiate the allegations. This latest ban follows a series of restrictions on other major platforms, including Google’s YouTube, Meta’s WhatsApp, and the messaging service Telegram. Officials maintain that these platforms disseminate content that violates Russian laws and are exploited for fraudulent and terrorist activities. Under President Vladimir Putin’s administration, Russia has enforced stringent regulations aimed at controlling internet usage and foreign tech services. The government continues to impose bans or limitations on websites and platforms that fail to adhere to local laws. In response to these challenges, the Russian government has introduced its own messaging service, MAX, though critics have raised concerns about the potential for government surveillance. As for the FaceTime ban, Apple has yet to issue a statement regarding the Russian government's decision to block the service.
