Ørsted seeks injunction against US government over project freeze

Ørsted has initiated court proceedings against the Trump administration in response to its decision to halt work on a significant wind farm project located off the northeastern coast of the United States. This legal challenge was filed in the US District Court for the District of Columbia, marking another chapter in the ongoing conflict between the US government and the offshore wind sector. In its statement, Ørsted—the largest offshore wind developer globally, with half of its shares owned by the Danish government—along with its partner Skyborn Renewables, a subsidiary of BlackRock's Global Infrastructure Partners, contended that the suspension of the lease for their Revolution Wind project contravenes existing laws. They expressed that pursuing litigation is essential to safeguard the project's rights, emphasizing that the suspension could lead to "substantial harm" if not reversed. Following the announcement, Ørsted's stock saw an increase of over 4 percent in Copenhagen's morning trading on Friday. This legal action comes just ten days after the Trump administration issued a suspension on leases for all large offshore wind projects in the US, citing national security concerns as the primary reason. The offshore wind industry has faced increasing pressure amid President Trump's longstanding opposition to wind turbines and his preference for fossil fuel sources. Ørsted, along with other companies in the sector, has encountered significant political and economic hurdles, particularly in an industry largely dominated by European firms rather than American ones.
