Roku stock surges on earnings beat, record quarter for premium subscriptions

Shares of Roku experienced a significant spike of over 6% on Friday, fueled by the company's impressive fourth-quarter performance that outpaced analysts' predictions and offered promising future guidance. According to estimates from LSEG, Roku's CEO Anthony Wood highlighted the trend of increasing premium subscriptions, stating, "The biggest driver of our subscriptions business is just the secular trend of more and more services moving into a service like premium subscriptions instead of just doing their own app." The fourth quarter was marked as Roku's most successful period ever for net additions to premium subscriptions. This innovative program allows users to access various streaming services, such as HBO Max and Paramount+, all through a single login on the Roku interface. Additionally, Roku announced plans to introduce premium subscription bundles later this year. Looking ahead, Roku projects revenue of $1.2 billion for the upcoming quarter, exceeding the analyst expectation of $1.16 billion, as reported by StreetAccount. For the entire fiscal year, the company anticipates reaching $5.5 billion in revenue, surpassing analyst forecasts of $5.34 billion. In a strategic move last May, Roku acquired Frndly, a live TV subscription streaming service, for $185 million, and recently launched an ad-free streaming service called Howdy, priced at $2.99 per month. Wood expressed confidence during the earnings call that Howdy could evolve into a substantial service in the future. Roku also aims to exceed 100 million streaming households this year. Following the strong results for the fourth quarter, analysts at Rosenblatt Securities upgraded Roku's stock rating from neutral to buy, citing several growth opportunities. They noted, "Big picture — Roku has built a formidable gatekeeper presence for U.S. streaming — half of all streaming in the U.S. on TVs goes through their devices." Moreover, they emphasized Roku's enhanced monetization capabilities through its partnership with Amazon, a new advertising tool for small and mid-sized businesses, and improvements made to the front page for advanced ads.
