Rockstar co-founder reveals why he quit as GTA and Red Dead workloads exploded

Dan Houser, a co-founder of Rockstar Games, has recently shed light on his 2020 exit from the company, citing the overwhelming workload associated with the studio's high-profile projects as a significant factor. In an interview with BBC Radio 4, reported by GamesRadar, Houser described the monumental effort required for the development of both Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption 2. He articulated that the scale of these last two releases was beyond anything he could have envisioned, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to work alongside a team of exceptionally talented individuals. However, he also acknowledged that the enormity of these projects took a substantial personal toll on him. As he reflected on the increasingly complex production processes, Houser stated, “the games were really long and tough to make,” highlighting the staggering amount of content involved, including around 450,000 lines of dialogue. He characterized the development as a massive undertaking, requiring meticulous coordination of numerous elements to achieve a cohesive final product. Houser emphasized that leading such extensive projects can consume years of a developer's life, leading him to question whether he could undertake another game of that magnitude. His insights come at a pivotal time as Rockstar has announced that Grand Theft Auto VI will be released on November 19, 2026, marking a wait that extends over 13 years since the debut of GTA V. This delay has drawn parallels to Duke Nukem Forever, which famously took over fourteen years to launch and holds the record for the longest development cycle in gaming history. The pressures faced by developers at Rockstar have only intensified, with ongoing support required for titles like GTA Online and Red Dead Online long after their initial releases. Houser's reflections underscore the extraordinary expectations placed on those creating some of the most ambitious games in the industry today.
