Welcome to the latest edition of the Rocket Report, where we explore the increasing demand for launch capacity among satellite operators, ranging from military entities to innovative startups. With the surge in global rocket launches, some may view these calls for more launch options as mere corporate strategies aimed at fostering competition and driving down prices. Currently, SpaceX is poised to achieve over 150 launches this year, while China is on track to conclude the year with more than 70 orbital missions. These figures are astonishing compared to the launch rates observed a few years back. However, the need for reliable and reusable rockets continues to grow, driven by the ambitious plans of mega-constellations that require significant launch capacity for initial deployments and ongoing replenishments. Additionally, the undefined Golden Dome missile shield and various nations’ aspirations for independent launch capabilities suggest that demand will only increase moving forward. In this edition, we also highlight some candid remarks from Astra CEO Chris Kemp, who recently stirred controversy at the Berkeley Space Symposium 2025, the university's largest undergraduate aerospace event. In his speech, Kemp aimed sharp criticisms at several competitors in the launch sector, diverging from his usual promotional tone about Astra. While some of Kemp's critiques may hold merit, they were notably harsh given Astra's inconsistent launch success and financial challenges to date. He praised SpaceX but took a pointed jab at the working conditions for its employees at Starbase, Texas, stating that life at Astra is "more fun than SpaceX" due to perceived safety and lifestyle advantages. Kemp further claimed that Firefly Aerospace provided Astra with subpar rocket engines as part of their propulsion partnership, fueling ongoing discussions about the competitive landscape in the aerospace industry.
