Rocket Lab surges 30% to fresh highs on revenue beat, record-setting launch deal

Rocket Lab's shares soared by 30%, reaching new heights after the aerospace firm exceeded revenue expectations for the first quarter and unveiled its largest launch contract to date. Based in Long Beach, California, the company reported revenues of $136.7 million from its space systems operations and $63.7 million from its launch services, surpassing FactSet's projections of $132.1 million and $59 million respectively. The company’s backlog has seen remarkable growth, more than doubling year-over-year to an impressive $2.2 billion. Additionally, Rocket Lab's guidance for the upcoming quarter also outdid Wall Street estimates, with expectations set between $225 million and $240 million, significantly above the $207.5 million forecast by LSEG. Over the past year, Rocket Lab's stock has surged more than fourfold, driven by increasing interest in the burgeoning space economy, especially in light of SpaceX's anticipated IPO later this year. The demand for space systems and satellite launches is further amplified by initiatives like President Donald Trump's Golden Dome project and NASA's Artemis missions. In a recent announcement, Rocket Lab confirmed it has secured its largest contract ever with an undisclosed client for its Neutron and Electron rockets, extending through 2029. This follows a significant $190 million agreement for 20 hypersonic test flights. The company is also expanding its capabilities by acquiring Motiv Space Systems, a robotic firm. CEO Peter Beck emphasized the strong demand in the industry during an earnings call, referring to the pace of product developments as "relentless." Rocket Lab is also preparing for the inaugural launch of its Neutron rocket, following a qualification testing challenge in January. The positive news from Rocket Lab has positively impacted the broader space sector, with companies like Firefly Aerospace and Intuitive Machines seeing their stocks jump over 20%, while Redwire and Voyager Technologies also recorded notable gains.
