Rocket Report: Neutron launch date is delayed again; Vector Launch is back—sort of

In the latest edition of the Rocket Report, significant developments have emerged regarding Rocket Lab's anticipated Neutron rocket. The company announced on Thursday that the debut of its medium-lift rocket has been delayed until the fourth quarter of this year, following complications during testing that involved a failure in the first stage tank. This setback pushes expectations for the Neutron’s first flight to 2027, which is disappointing news for enthusiasts eager to witness the launch of another reusable rocket. In other news, the legacy of Vector Launch is experiencing a revival, albeit in a different form. Phantom Space, a Tucson-based satellite and rocket developer co-founded by Jim Cantrell in 2019, has acquired the remnants of Vector Launch. This acquisition is particularly significant as Cantrell had previously departed Vector amid financial difficulties in 2019. He revealed that many assets from Vector, including flight-proven designs and engineering data, will be integrated into Phantom’s Daytona vehicle architecture. This move aims to minimize development risks associated with the Daytona rocket. Cantrell expressed the importance of this acquisition, stating, “As the original architect of Vector’s vision, it’s deeply meaningful to bring these assets home to Phantom. This acquisition isn’t just about technology; it’s about momentum. We’re accelerating Daytona, creating high-tech aerospace jobs in Tucson, and moving faster toward orbital capability.” The Daytona rocket has faced its share of delays over the years, with its expected launch now set for the latter half of 2027. Lastly, a recent amendment to the United Kingdom’s Space Industry Act will establish financial liability limits for launch operators in case of mishaps. According to Sarah Madden, a space lawyer at Winckworth Sherwood, this change mitigates the risk of unlimited liability for operators launching from the UK, which could significantly impact the industry’s growth and safety protocols.
