Rocket Lab continues buying spree by acquiring satellite company Iridium

Rocket Lab is making significant strides in the space industry by acquiring satellite operator Iridium, marking a pivotal step towards establishing itself as a comprehensive space services provider. This acquisition, still pending completion, involves Rocket Lab purchasing Iridium's shares at a price of $54 each, placing the total valuation of the satellite company at an impressive $8 billion. This latest deal is part of a broader trend of consolidation within the aerospace sector, as Rocket Lab has been actively expanding its portfolio this year. Earlier, the company acquired Motiv, a space robotics firm, in May, followed by the purchase of laser communication specialist Mynaric in April, and a precision component manufacturer in February. Additionally, Rocket Lab secured the services of optical sensor defense contractor Geost last year. Iridium operates a substantial number of satellites currently in orbit and holds a valuable spectrum of resources. In a statement released on Monday, Rocket Lab expressed its intention to enhance Iridium’s existing network, aiming to tap into new markets and innovate space-based services that will cater to a global clientele. This acquisition comes amid a wave of mergers and acquisitions in the space and satellite industry, highlighted by ViaSat's purchase of Inmarsat and a private equity firm’s acquisition of Maxar earlier this year. Major players like Lockheed Martin have also joined the fray, acquiring satellite manufacturer Terran Orbital in 2024. Furthermore, Amazon is making moves in the sector by purchasing Globalstar for $11.6 billion to bolster its space internet initiative, which aims to compete with SpaceX's Starlink.
