Rocket Lab is once again demonstrating its ambition to be recognized as more than just a rocket manufacturer. In its latest quarterly report, released Thursday, the company showcased that its revenue is increasingly fueled by its space systems division, rather than solely by its launch services. The report revealed that Rocket Lab's space systems contributed $97.9 million to the total $144.5 million earned in the second quarter, marking a significant 36% increase compared to the same period last year. Despite the impressive revenue growth, the company faced a net loss of $66.4 million. CEO Peter Beck emphasized a bustling quarter filled with mergers and acquisitions, as Rocket Lab inches closer to finalizing its acquisition of Geost, a firm specializing in optical payloads. This strategic move, valued at $275 million in cash and equity, aims to establish a new business unit named Optical Systems, dedicated to expanding the manufacturing capabilities for electro-optical and infrared sensors, which are critical for missile warning, tracking, and enhancing space domain awareness. This acquisition is part of Rocket Lab's broader strategy to compete for significant Department of Defense contracts, including the ambitious Golden Dome initiative. The company has already secured notable defense contracts, such as a $515 million agreement to build 18 satellites for the Space Development Agency's missile-tracking constellation, with production well underway after meeting the DOD's mission specifications. On the ground, Rocket Lab is making solid progress toward launching its larger Neutron rocket. The launch complex in Virginia is on track for completion in the third quarter of this year, with hardware en route and the new Archimedes rocket engine undergoing rigorous daily testing. While specific launch dates remain undisclosed, the company is committed to making an 'all-out effort' to have Neutron ready for launch before the end of 2025. As the quarter closed, Rocket Lab reported $564 million in cash and equivalents, projecting revenues of $145 to $155 million for the upcoming quarter.
